Dalam beberapa minggu yang lepas saya berkongsi satu berita sedih. Kakak seorang daripada pesakit saya meninggal dunia akibat serangan asthma beberapa hari sebelum hari raya.
Ironinya, pagi itu mereka berjumpa, berborak dan bersala
m-salaman. Ketika di tempat kerja, kakaknya membuat panggilan telefon mengatakan bahawa dia tidak boleh bernafas akibat asthma. Adiknya membuat panggilan kepada suaminya untuk ke rumah kakaknya dengan segera.
15 minit selepas itu, apabila tiba di rumah kakaknya, suaminya mendapati bahawa kakaknya sudah tiada lagi.
Status Asthmaticus boleh didefinisikan ialah serangan asthma yang sangat teruk dan ubat seperti inhaler biasa tidak memberi kesan apa-apa kepada serangan ini. Oleh itu ia berbeza dengan serangan asma akut biasa yang memberi respon kepada rawatan awal.
Kejadian serangan asthma maut ini boleh berlaku kepada semua penghidap asthma terutama yang mempunyai serangan kerap dan tidak menjaga ubat-ubatan yang diambil untuk mengelak dari serangan asthma.
Gejala Status Asthmaticus ialah nafas berbunyi (wheezing), sesak untuk bernafas dan tidak boleh menghabiskan satu ayat di dalam satu nafas. Oleh kerana pernafasan menjadi kerja yang sangat berat untuk mereka, otot di leher dan di dada mula bekerja dan anda dapat melihat otot ini tegang untuk membantu pernafasan.

Status asthmaticus adalah kes kecemasan. Rawatan diberi mengikut keadaan. Nebulizer dengan steroid dan bronchodilator (pembuka paru-paru) secara berterusan diberikan bersama-sama oksigen. Suntikan seperti anti histamine, steroid atau adrenaline diberikan.
Sekiranya teruk pesakit akan dimasukkan ke dalam ICU, diintubasikan dan bernafas menggunakan mesin.
Saya amat rasa sedih apabila terdapat ibu-bapa yang tidak membenarkan anak mengambil nebulizer asthma walaupun anak mengalami serangan asthma yang teruk. Mereka berpendapat bahawa sekali ambil nebulizer maka ia akan menyebabkan ketagihan dan serangan asthma akan berulang-ulang selepas itu. Sedangkan nebulizer membantu untuk mengurangkan kesusahan bernafas dan "lapar udara" yang dihidapi oleh anak-anak.
Itu adalah konsep yang salah. Asthma itu sendiri adalah penyakit yang berulang-ulang. Ia seolah-olah serupa dengan masalah gegata di kulit ketika anda memakan ketam.
Asthma adalah satu jenis alahan dan mengelakkannya dengan mengelakkan penyebab utama asthma seperti habuk, debu, sejuk, bulu kucing, dan asap adalah seperi anda tidak mengambil ketam untuk mengelakkan gegata timbul.
